A misconception first, because it decides arguments: the first digits of an EAN-13 do not tell you where a product was made. The prefix identifies which national GS1 organization issued the company its number range — a firm registered through GS1 Germany can manufacture in Vietnam and the code still opens with 400–440. Plenty of "check the barcode to see the country" advice circulates; it's reading a field that was never about geography.
Structurally, EAN-13 is a GTIN-13: twelve digits of identity plus a mod-10 check digit, and that check digit is the part people get wrong by hand. Type 12 digits here and the thirteenth is computed; paste all 13 and it's verified, with a row error when the math disagrees. The North American cousin, UPC-A, is the same numbering pool one digit shorter — an EAN-13 that starts with 0 is a UPC-A, and modern point-of-sale systems scan both interchangeably. For UPC-A and its compressed UPC-E variant specifically, the UPC generator handles the conversions.
The honest boundary of any EAN-13 generator, this one included: it renders whatever digits you give it, and rendering isn't ownership. Numbers that go through a retail checkout must be licensed from GS1 — a made-up code will collide with someone else's product in the retailer's catalog, and the delisting conversation that follows is not fun. Where a free generator is exactly right: proofing artwork before the print run, internal SKUs for your own storeroom that never leave the building, and testing that your scanner setup reads what your label printer produces.

Should I type 12 digits or 13?
Either. Twelve digits get the check digit computed and appended; thirteen get verified, and a wrong final digit flags the row instead of rendering a code that scanners will read as a different product.Can I invent an EAN-13 for a product I sell?
For your own shelves and systems — yes, nobody checks. For any external retailer — no: the number space is licensed through GS1, and an invented code can collide with a real product in their catalog. Get a company prefix from GS1, then generate your codes from it here.What size can an EAN-13 shrink to and still scan?
The nominal symbol is 37.3 × 25.9 mm; the spec allows scaling between 80% and 200%. Below 80% you're gambling on the scanner and print quality — and cutting the height (a common trick to fit packaging) hurts more than cutting width, because angled checkout scanners need those tall bars.
