An online barcode scanner reads a code straight from your device camera, so any phone or laptop with a webcam becomes a scanner. There is no app to install and no barcode gun to buy. Point the camera at the code, and the decoded value appears as soon as the frame is sharp enough to read.
The scanner handles both families of code. 2D codes (QR, Data Matrix) hold more data in a small square and tolerate partial damage, which is why most asset tags use them. 1D barcodes (EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 128, Code 39, ITF) are the linear stripes on retail packaging, shelf labels, and legacy inventory tags. Both decode the same way here: the camera reads them, or you upload a photo and get the value back.
Everything happens in your browser. The image never leaves your device, which matters when the code encodes an internal asset ID, a serial number, or a Wi-Fi password. Does the camera scanner work on iPhone?
Yes, in Safari and Chrome on iOS, as long as the page is served over HTTPS and you allow camera access when prompted. iOS blocks camera access on insecure pages, so an http:// address shows the Image mode fallback instead.Why is the camera button doing nothing?
Three usual causes: camera permission was denied for the site (reset it in the browser's site settings), another app or tab already holds the camera, or the page is not on HTTPS. Image mode works in all three cases: take a photo and upload it.
