Data Matrix exists because some things are too small for any other code. The symbol scales from 10×10 modules up to 144×144, and a readable mark can sit in a few square millimeters — which is why you find it lasered onto circuit boards and dot-peened into engine parts. Surgical instruments carry it through the autoclave twice a day. A QR code with the same payload simply doesn't fit there.
The version everything modern uses is ECC-200. It carries Reed-Solomon error correction, so a symbol keeps decoding after scratches and partial wear, and it caps out at 2,335 alphanumeric characters, or 1,556 bytes of arbitrary data. This generator enforces the byte cap as you type — conservative for plain-ASCII payloads, which the C40 text mode packs tighter, but nobody marking parts gets anywhere near it. Two details matter at print time. The finder pattern is an L: two solid edges the scanner uses for orientation, with a dashed clocking track on the opposite sides. And the required quiet zone is only one module wide, against four for QR — part of how Data Matrix squeezes into spaces QR can't.
If a trading partner asked you for a GS1 Data Matrix — pharmaceutical serialization and medical-device UDI marking both ride on it — be aware that flavor starts with an FNC1 character and structures the payload into application identifiers. This tool produces plain ECC-200 without the FNC1 prefix, which is what internal part marking and asset tags call for. Regulated GS1 payloads need software from that ecosystem.
Defense suppliers meet Data Matrix in another uniform: MIL-STD-130 item marking specifies ECC-200 as the machine-readable symbol for IUID. The symbol this tool draws is exactly that; composing the UII payload inside the ISO/IEC 15434 envelope is its own homework, and your contract officer will have opinions about it.

The honest split: if a person with a phone scans the code, use QR. If a fixed scanner, a warehouse gun, or a size constraint is involved, Data Matrix. We tag office equipment with QR precisely because staff scan tags with whatever phone they hold — and we'd still pick Data Matrix for anything smaller than a matchbox.

How small can I print a Data Matrix code?
The limit is your printer and scanner, not the format. On a 300 dpi office printer, keep the module (one black square) at 0.5 mm or larger — a 10×10 symbol lands around 6 mm wide with its quiet zone. Industrial DPM marks go smaller, but they're laser-etched and read by fixed scanners, not printed on an Avery sheet.Does this generator work for laser or dot-peen marking?
It produces the same ECC-200 symbol a marking machine would, so it's fine for proofing a payload or printing interim labels. For production DPM you'd normally generate inside the marking software itself, which compensates for the surface — a dot-peened code on curved metal needs different cell geometry than ink on paper.Why does my batch have a few blank cells?
A blank cell means that row failed validation — usually a payload over the 1,556-byte ECC-200 cap, which non-Latin characters reach faster because each one costs 2–3 bytes in UTF-8. The row's error note names the reason; fix the value and the cell fills in.
