How each maintenance KPI is calculated and what a healthy number looks like.

  • What is MTBF and how is it calculated?

    Mean Time Between Failures is the average operating time between breakdowns: total operating hours divided by the number of breakdowns. A higher MTBF means a more reliable asset. Track it over time — a rising MTBF after a maintenance change tells you the change worked.

    What is MTTR and what counts as good?

    Mean Time To Repair is total repair time divided by the number of repairs — the average time to get an asset back online. Lower is better. There's no universal target; what matters is the trend and how it compares across similar assets. Falling MTTR usually points to better spare-parts availability or clearer procedures.

    How are MTBF and MTTR different?

    MTBF measures how often things break (reliability); MTTR measures how quickly you fix them (maintainability). You want MTBF high and MTTR low. Together they drive availability — frequent failures or slow repairs both pull availability down.
